David Katz is a mergers and acquisitions lawyer by day and an unassuming hero by night and on the weekends. For the last 30 years, he’s been a first responder search and rescuer who has been awarded multiple valor awards, including one for taking the Robert Blake trial shooter down with his own bare hands outside of a courthouse.
As the team leader of the L.A. County Sheriff’s search and rescue unit in Malibu, Calabasas, Lost Hills, and Agoura Hills, his territory spans from the Pacific Ocean through the Santa Monica Mountains. He’s no stranger to high profile celebrity car accidents, cliff rescues or saving multi-million dollar homes from being destroyed by massive brush fires.
The morning Kobe Bryant’s helicopter crashed in Calabasas, David was called to service. He was the first person from his team at the scene and never could have imagined what he’d find. In this episode, we’ll talk about how he and his teammates deal with grief, trauma, and PTSD after witnessing horrific events that feel impossible to unsee.
Both of David’s parents were Holocaust survivors from a small town in Poland who met and married in California, where he was raised as the youngest of three sons. David lost his wife to breast cancer when his son was only 7 years old and his step-daughter was just 16. Through his own experience of dealing with grief and coming out the other side to see the light, David is able to offer words of encouragement to others about dealing with the pain and trauma to find healing. David is proof because he’s found love again and is enjoying the finer things in life like traveling to Paris and savoring good red wine.
Let’s remember even fearless heroes have to take care of their mental health. I’m so excited to welcome David Katz.
