Ross Szabo- From Class President & Varsity Basketball Player- to Being Called Psycho after Ending Up in the Mental Hospital- to Pioneering the Youth Mental Health Movement

Ross Szabo was his high school student body president, played varsity basketball, and volunteered for the Special Olympics and Students Against Drunk Driving. On the outside, he looked picture-perfect.

Ross didn’t dare tell anyone he was diagnosed as bipolar with anger and psychotic features at 16 years old out of shame and pride because he was a scholar-athlete. But on the inside, he couldn’t hide behind his happy face anymore and at 17 he was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life.

Ross is here today to talk about his inspirational journey of turning his pain into becoming a social innovator who pioneered the youth mental health movement.

Ross is the Wellness Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, an author, and an award-winning speaker who uses the power of his personal story to captivate his audience. He’s the CEO of Human Power Project, a company that designs mental health curricula and he’s spoken to more than two million people about the importance of mental health by providing a positive example to seek help.

Ross is the co-author of Behind Happy Faces; Taking Charge of Your Mental Health and a blogger for The Huffington Post. He’s proud to say his Human Power Project’s curriculum, Behind Happy Faces is being utilized by over 200,000 students with many more to come.
